Chapter six

Tayla

I had been trying to reach Hayden ever since I had my first free period at school. He didn’t pick up. I tried calling him twice more before going back to class, but he still didn’t respond. Once I got out of school, I started blowing his phone up. Not because I was insecure or thought he was cheating, but because I was worried about him.

He didn’t answer not one phone call. Now, I was really worried. I almost went to his uncle’s house to ask if he had heard from Hayden or Maxlond, but I knew his answer would be no. They couldn’t wait to get as far away from him as possible, so I knew going over there would be pointless.

By the time he decided to respond to my text messages, I had climbed in the bed. He said he’d come pick me up from school tomorrow so we could talk. I sure hoped he had it on his mind to let me know why he was unreachable all damn day.

That night, I tossed and turned worrying about what Hayden had gotten himself involved in. I woke up early the next morning for school. I got dressed, took care of my daily hygiene and headed to school. All day, the only thing I could think about was seeing Hayden and getting to the bottom of why he wasn’t answering my calls or text messages yesterday.

When 2:45 came around, I couldn’t head to the parking lot faster if I had a motor scooter.

I rushed outside and practically sprinted to the parking lot. He was waiting for me, so I slid into the passenger seat, clicked my seatbelt and waited for his explanation.

“Hey,” he said as he glanced over at me.

“Hey.”

He put the car in reverse and backed out of the spot. I sniffed the air because there was something different about the odor in here. It smelled like baby powder and flowers. I knew it wasn’t from anything that I wore because I didn’t use baby powder.

“Why your car smell like that?” I asked.

He sniffed the air and asked, “Smell like what? I don’t smell nothing different.”

“It smells like flowers and some kind of powder.”

He chuckled a little before saying, “Your mind is playing tricks on you.”

“My mind maybe, my nose, uh uh. What’s that smell? You had some other female in your car?”

“To be honest, yes.”

“Who was it? Arielle? Kamiyah?” I asked.

The nervousness in his face told me it wasn’t either of them. If they hadn’t been in his car, who the hell had?

“Nah, it wasn’t them.”

“Then who?”

“My baby mama.”

Baby mama! What the hell he meant his baby mama? Last I checked, he said the baby wasn’t his. How and when did we get from it ain’t mine to my baby mama?

“Your baby mama? I thought you said the baby wasn’t yours!”

“I said I didn’t think it was mine…”

“No! You clearly said the baby wasn’t yours!”

“I also said that if it was mine, she got pregnant before we met,” he said.
